Abstract

Pentachlorobutyric acid C Cl3,CHCl,CHCl, COOH is prepared by adding aluminium chloride to a solution of anhydrous chloral in trichloroethylene and then hydrolysing the product with the aid of cold aqueous hydrochloric acid.ALSO:An extreme pressure lubricant comprises lubricating oil and pentachlorobutyric acid CCl3.CHCl.CHCl.COOH. Optional ingredients which may be present in the lubricant are organic sulphur compounds (e.g. dibenzyl disulphide) and methyl, ethyl, propyl or isopropyl esters of stearic, palmitic or behenic acids. In the examples, mineral lubricating oil compositions are described containing pentachlorobutyric acid with or without dibenzyl disulphide.
