Abstract
850,332. Removing filter tips from defective cigarettes. BRITISH-AMERICAN TOBACCO CO. Ltd. Feb. 12, 1959 [June 25, 1958], No. 20418/58. Class 130 The mouthpieces of defective cigarettes, projecting from the ends of grooves in a rotary drum 2, are sheared off by a stationary block 19 flush with the end face of the drum 2. The cigarettes are fed to the drum by a hopper 1 the back wall 5 of which may be provided with an adjustable plate 6 to accommodate cigarettes of different lengths. The grooves 15 in the drum 2 are of the same length as the tobacco portion of the cigarettes so that the join between the tobacco and mouthpiece portions is flush with the face of the drum. Mouthpieces of different lengths may be catered for by an adjustable plate 13. A knife 30 may be provided immediately in front of the breaker 19 to prepare the cigarettes for shearing by cutting through a small part of the wrapper. The sheared off mouthpieces fall into a shoot 21 and the tobacco portions are fed through a shoot 22 to a ripping machine in which the tobacco is recovered.
