In a mouthpiece cigarette making machine, in which two cigarette components are united to an intervening mouthpiece portion by a uniting band to form a group which is severed centrally to produce two complete mouthpiece cigarettes, apparatus is provided for rejecting and separating the components of a non- united group such that the centre component (i.e. the mouthpiece) is segregated from the end components (i.e. the cigarette part) into separate receivers. A cigarette mouthpiece group is united by band B in rolling passage formed by stationary surface 2 (Fig. 1) and rotating drum 3 to form group G which is transferred by cylinder 5 to clockwise rotating rejector drum 10 in which it is held by flutes 12, until it reaches the "3 o'clock" position when the group come to be supported by the concave supporting surface 13. Surface 13 consists of 6 main parts including two guides 14, 15 (Fig. 2) with chamfered ends 35, 36, anchored at 20, 21, the guides being so spaced that the centre line of each is approximately coincident with the vertical line through the centre of gravity of each cigarette length; guides 16, 17 fixed by pins 22 to guides 14 and 15, and spaced such that the inner edge of each guide lies outside the vertical line through the centre of gravity of each cigarette length and continuation guides 18, 19 spaced as guides 14, 15. When a cigarette mouthpiece group reaches guides 14, 15, if the united band B is faulty, the mouthpiece M falls into receiver 33, and the two cigarette lengths are carried to guides 16, 17 where because of the wider spacing they are rejected and fall into receiver 34. The satisfactory groups G are carried over the surface 13 via guides 18, 19 and assisted by stripping fingers are transferred to cutting cylinder 28, on which the cigarette group is divided to produce two mouthpiece cigarettes. If a centre mouthpiece is not stripped from cylinder 5 with its flanking cigarette lengths it continues round cylinder 5 until stripped by fingers 37 below which is positioned plate 38. The rejected component slides over plate 38 and drops into receiver 33.
