850,025. Valves. BUTLER & CO. (BRISTOL) Ltd., W., and KERNON, D. R. Jan. 16, 1959 [Dec. 6, 1957], No. 38047/57. Class 135. A fluid pressure relief valve comprises a valve body 1, 11 having a seat 5 and a movable part which includes a closure member 6 and is movable by the fluid pressure to be relieved along a fixed guide 13 to open the valve, a flexible membrane 16 extending between the movable part and the body, and closing a space capable of holding oil which has'access to the surfaces of contact between the movable part and the guide for their lubrication, a wall by which this space is bounded having one opening 30 fitted with a non-return valve and a smaller opening 29, the arrangement being such that as the valve is opened oil passes out of the space through both openings 29, 30 but on closing oil re-enters the space through only the smaller opening 29 to provide a dashpot effect. As further shown, the movable part of the valve includes also a spindle 9 working in the guide 13 and a cup-shaped member carried by the spindle, this member having the inner part of the membrane 16 secured thereto and forming a well whereby the oil has access to the working surfaces. A lowermost weight 20 for loading the valve is formed to seat on a soft packing 25 in the closed position to protect the oil spaces within from the surrounding atmosphere.
