A shut - off valve suitable for controlling fluids containing suspended solids such as pulp fibres or dustladen gases &c. and comprising a sliding gate 4 which enters a groove 5 in the casing when in the closed position has one or more passages 6 leading from the groove to allow the expulsion of solid material from the groove. The passages 6, which may be in the housing as shown or in the gate and may communicate as shown with the conduit or with a separate, open or closed container, increase in cross-sectional area from the groove towards the opposite end.
