Class 135 A pressure relief valve comprises a body 10. Figs. 1, 2. with an inlet passage 13, terminating in a seat 14, with which coacts a flexible sealing diaphragm 18 secured by a ring 22 to a weight 16, and a restricted outlet 28 to atmosphere. Normal operating pressure in the inlet supports the weight and acts through a hole 24 in the diaphragm to separate the weight and the diaphragm and causes the latter to seal against the seat as in Fig. 2. If the pressure exceeds a predetermined value, the seal breaks and pressure builds up in a chamber 27 surrounding the seat, due to the restricted outlet 28, and rapidly moves the diaphragm to open the valve fully. Due to the additional area acted on by the pressure, the valve will not close until the pressure drops to a value below opening pressure. and the closure is cushioned by the fluid in space 26 between the weight and member. The diaphragm may be made of one piece of flexible material, e.g. fabric-reinforced, synthetic rubber. The space above the diaphragm is vented to atmosphere.
