802,217. Valves. TAYLOR, E. H., and BAXTER WOODHOUSE & TAYLOR, Ltd. Jan. 31, 1956, No. 3137/56. Class 135. A housing 1, which has an inlet 2, a threaded outlet 3 and apertures 13 leading to an incubator or a container serving a pressure helmet or breathing mask, not shown, encloses a differential valve-closure member 5 consisting of upper and lower tubular parts 7, 9 and an intermediate disc 6 with ports 19 therein. The part 9 which has a knife edge that co-operates with an adjustable flat, or as shown, a domed seat 10, is formed with an internal diameter larger than the external diameter of the part 7 by an amount equal to half the difference between the latter and the internal diameter of the lower end of the outlet 3 to ensure that the member 5 remains seated when the pressure in the housing is greater than ambient pressure. A resilient rubber tube 8 interconnects the outlet 3 and part 7 whilst a flexible rubber diaphragm 18 having a central opening, cooperates with the ports 19. When the housing interior is at ambient pressure the member 5 is urged on to the seat 10 by the tube 8 but upon gas at a higher pressure than that in the container being supplied to the inlet 2 it reaches the apertures 13 by way of ports 19 and the diaphragm aperture. Upon the container pressure exceeding that of the supply the diaphragm 18 is forced to cover the ports 19 whereupon the pressure difference across the member 5 lifts the latter from the seat 10 and opens the outlet 3. In a modification, the annular diaphragm is stuck, rivetted or otherwise secured to the closure member and normally engages a seat inside the housing, the reaction of the diaphragm against which assists the rubber tube in keeping the closure member on its seat. The internal and external diameters of the upper tubular part and outlet, respectively, are the same and the internal diameter of the lower tubular part is smaller than the external diameter of the upper tubular part and equal to the diameter of the circle defined by the locus of the centres of curvature of the annular corrugation of the unsupported portion of the tube between the upper tubular part and the outlet.
