Class 135 In a safety valve the crosssectional area of the closure member is three to four times greater than the seat opening and the peripheral portion of the member extends downwardly below the seat at least <SP>1</SP>/ 32 and not in excess of <SP>3</SP>/ 16 of an inch. In the safety valve an elastomer closure member 10 is carried in a recess in a retainer 6 so as to form a huddling chamber 17, a vent 30 through the retainer preventing accumulation of fluid behind the member 10 and the adjustable spring 7 loading the retainer acting as a solid stop for the full-open position. A vent 31 at the bottom of the casing allows water to escape from around the valve. The inlet 2a is slightly convergent, and the outlet 26 formed in the spring adjusting screw 9. The vent 30 may be used as an auxiliary relief passage for the valve and may be closed by plastic, elastomer or fusible material.
