Abstract

842,461. Foam-making apparatus. PYRENE CO. Ltd. May 13, 1958 [May 27, 1957], No. 16786/57. Class 14(l). [Also in Group XXIX] A foam generating apparatus in which air is entrained through the end of, or side openings 6 in, a foam tube 5 by a jet of a flowing solution of a foam stabilising compound in water, and the mixture forms foam in flowing through the tube to an outlet at one end, is provided with a device (see Group XXIX) for producing a conical jet of solution from an outlet 13 feeding the tube 5. The device includes a tube 1 for the supply of solution to the inlet orifice 11 of a cylindrical chamber 9 having an outlet 13 and additional inlets 17 for the inflow of a minor part of the incoming stream. The arrangement of the inlets and outlet is such that the flow from the outlet 13 is in the form of a conical jet. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, the chamber 9 is carried by a plate 19 which abuts a fixed, apertured plate 20, and the plate 19 is attached to a rotary pin 23 fixed to an operating lever 43. Thus the plate 19 can be rocked about the pin axis to bring the chamber into register with the opening in the plate 20 or it may close that opening i.e. the plate 19 may be used as a shut-off valve. In Fig. 4 water is fed axially through the chamber and also through an inlet 30, annular space 28 and inlets 17, and thereby induces a foam stabilising compound into the water stream through an opening 31. In Fig. 5 a container 32 of pre-mixed water and foam stabilising compound supports and feeds a nozzle 35 in which the device for providing a conical jet consists of two suitably apertured flanged and dished discs 38 and 39.
