[Also in Group XXIX] A ratio shift lever 4 controlling planetary gearing in a motor vehicle is oscillated back-andforth about a journal 7 so that one or other of two pawls 16, 17 rotates a drum 5 step-by-step, compressed air fed in through a pipe 33 to a space 34 in the drum then being fed through spring-biased piston-like ports 42 to ports 39 in the housing 1 surrounding the drum and leading through pipes to ratio-establishing brakes in the gearing. The gearing may be a four-speed and reverse planetary gear in series with a twospeed planetary gear. The pawls 16, 17 are pivoted by bolts 22 upon the ratio shift lever 4, and are biased by an inverted U-spring 19 to engage teeth 18 on the drum. A cam 25 on the control housing 1 is so positioned as to disengage the inoperative pawl, e.g. 17, when the other pawl (16) is operative to turn the drum. Detent rollers 26 on levers 27 pivoted upon the casing 1 are biased towards each other by a spring 29 and engage the teeth 18 to hold the drum in a selected position. The piston-like ports 42 in the drum may be made from nylon or carbon. The shift lever 4 is restored to its central position by spring-biased plungers 9 in the housing 1. A catch 45 on the casing normally lies in the path of a lug 46 carried by the drum 5 and limits rotation of the drum 5 to prevent a down-shift into neutral. To engage neutral, a knob 51 on the ratio shift lever 4 is depressed against spring bias so that a plunger 50 engages a lever 47 to withdraw the catch 45 from the path of the drum lug 46. Alternatively, the catch 45 may be modified to prevent the ratio shift lever 4 being moved from the neutral to the reverse position. A governor responsive to engine speed supplies hydraulic or pneumatic pressure to a plunger 58 which, while a predetermined engine speed is exceeded, is projected into the path of the ratio shift lever on its down-shift side to prohibit a down-shift. A switch 57 in the vehicle engine starter circuit is closed only by a cam 56 carried by the drum 5 when neutral has been established in the gearing. A pointer 53 moving over a dial 54 indicating the ratio established in the gearing, Fig. 4 (not shown), is located exteriorly of the control housing.
