Abstract
892,527. Change-speed controls. MARSHALL, C. E. Sept. 23, 1960 [Dec. 4, 1959], No. 32827/60. Class 80 (2). A three-speed and reverse gear-box is operated by straight-through movements of a shift-lever 23, the lower end of which carries a transverse pin 42 selectively engageable in notches 28a<SP>1</SP>, 32a<SP>1</SP> in two independently-pivoted sector-plates 28, 32, the former of which is connected to a rod 40 for engaging reverse and first gears, while the latter is connected to a second rod 38 for engaging second and third gears. As shown, plates 28, 32 are mounted on a common pivot 24, notch 28a<SP>1</SP> is formed in the arcuate edge 28a of plate 28, and notch 32a<SP>1</SP> is formed in an arcuate slot 32a in plate 32. The transverse pin 42 is urged upwardly by a spring 44 so that in the neutral position of lever 23, as shown, the pin is urged into notch 32a<SP>1</SP> and is clear of notch 28a<SP>1</SP>. To engage reverse or first gear lever 23 is depressed, to free pin 42 from notch 32a<SP>1</SP> and engage notch 28a<SP>1</SP>, and is then rotated to turn plate 28 and operate rod 40, the pin moving through slot 32a. For second or third gear lever 23 is released so that pin 42 is freed from notch 28a<SP>1</SP> and engages notch 32a<SP>1</SP> to turn plate 32 and operate rod 38, the pin moving over the arcuate edge 28a of plate 28.
