Abstract

844,120. Change-speed control. FULLER MANUFACTURING CO. July 24, 1958, No. 23929/58. Class 80 (2). In a change-speed gear particularly for a motor vehicle, a ratio-shift facilitating brake 11 mounted on an element constantly rotatable with the output of the main clutch 58, such as a countershaft 12 as shown, and power operated by electrical or, as shown, fluid-pressure means, is actuated by the simultaneous operation of both of two switches or valves arranged in series between a power source 74 and a brake actuating means 64, one switch or valve being operated manually, the other being operated automatically by a shift-rod interlock 27 to permit power flow to the brake only in neutral. The interlock 27, Fig. 2, comprises a block 28 receiving three shift rods 22, each having a circumferential groove 38 coincident, at the neutral position of the rod, with the axis of a transverse bore 33 housing four cone-ended cylindrical plungers 45, 43, 44, 51 which co-act with balls 39 riding on the rods 22 to permit shift away from neutral of only one rod at one time and, upon any such shift, to extend pins 52 against springs 54 to operate a switch or valve 66 to prevent power flow to the brake 11 and a switch 50 for auxiliary equipment, not shown. In the conventional change-speed gear shown in Fig. 1, a lever mounted manually operated three-way valve 70 connecting either the pressure source 74 to the line 68 or the line 68 to exhaust is followed by the three-way valve 66 connecting either the line 68 to the brakeactuating cylinder 64 or the said cylinder to exhaust. In Fig. 3, not shown, the manuallycontrolled valve is operated by clutch pedal depression beyond the declutched position. In Fig. 4, not shown, the valve positions are reversed, the interlock operated valve being two-way and arranged before the clutchoperated valve.
