Abstract
829,429. Electrodeposition of chromium. DIAMOND ALKALI CO. Oct. 25, 1956 [Oct. 28, 1955], No. 32593/56. Drawings to Specification. Class 41. Chromium is electrodeposited from an aqueous solution of chromium ions and anions of sulphuric, nitric, or hydrochloric acid to which is added a composition produced by reacting a hexavalent chromium compound, an organic reducing agent, and hydrofluosilicic acid or the reaction product of hydrogen fluoride with silicon dioxide. The composition containing 22.9 to 28.2% of chromium, 2.58 to 7.75% of silicon, and 23.9 to 36.4% of fluorine. Typically the hexavalent chromium compound is chromic acid; the reducing agent is a sugar, although polyhydric alcohols, gelatine, sawdust, acids such as formic, acetic, oxalic, glycollic, tartaric and citric acids, and alkyl esters of the lower fatty acids and substances such as molasses and fruit pulp may be used; and the plating bath is a sulphuric acid-chromic acid bath having a CrO 3 : H 2 SO 4 ratio of from 250-150: 1. The composition used may be prepared by boiling the reactants together and may be spray-dried before use.
