Class 82(1) Means for casting molten metals in a vacuum comprises a ladle 1 having a metal exterior and refractory lining 10, the ladle in use being located above an evacuated receptacle 5, and having a nozzle sleeve 2 in the bottom of the ladle which sleeve is provided with a metal covering 7, interposed between the nozzle sleeve and the refractory lining, of such form that partially encloses the side surfaces and, if desired, the bottom surface of the nozzle sleeve with the upper end of the covering located below the upper surface of the nozzle sleeve. The covering which is preferably welded to the bottom plate 9 of the ladle, may be of truncated conical shape with its largest diameter uppermost as shown, or with its smaller diameter uppermost.
