Abstract
970,558. Degassing apparatus. McGRAWEDISON CO. May 8, 1962 [May 16, 1961], No. 17659/62. Heading C7D. A vacuum degassing vessel 10 has a nozzle 20 extending from its lower end for drawing molten metal 12 for degassing into the chamber 19 of the vessel from a ladle below which may move relative to the vessel (see Fig. 1, not shown). The base portion 44 of the lining of the vessel comprises a plurality of refractories 52, all preferably constructed to have standard shapes (except refractories 54 at centre), disposed side by side defining a spherical sector having a radius of curvature more than the vessel height. The refractory shapes 53 surrounding the upper end of the nozzle bore 21 have curved surfaces to provide a smooth transition between the bore and the upper surface 61 of the base portion. The roof 50 of the lining may also define a spherical sector detachably supported by skewbacks 66 on top of the side walls 46, 48 of the lining, the wall 46 being frusto-conical and the wall 48 being cylindrical.
