801,518. Degasifying steel. DORTMUNDHORDER HUTTENUNION AKT.-GES. Jan. 8, 1957 [Jan. 17, 1956; Feb. 27, 1956;], No. 761/57. Class 72. Molten metal is degasified by removing and degasifying successive small portions of a melt contained in a ladle, the degasified portion being returned to the main. bulk each time until the desired level of degasification has been attained. As shown, the apparatus for degasifying steel consists of a ladle 12, carried on truck 11 by platform 13 the vertical height of which can be adjusted by the hydraulic ram 14, and a vacuum vessel 4 with a refractory lining 2 and metal casing 1 connected to a vacuum pump 9 by the line 10. In operation, the ladle is positioned beneath the vacuum vessel 4 and is raised so that the end of inlet pipe 5 dips beneath the surface of the melt, the thin metal cone 8 serving to push aside the surface layer of slag before it melts. A vacuum is established in the vessel 4 and a small quantity of molten steel is drawn into the vessel and degasified after which the ladle is lowered sufficiently to remove the molten steel from the vessel 4 but keeping the outlet of pipe 5 beneath the surface of the melt. The sequence of operations is repeated until the melt in ladle 12 is degasified. The vacuum vessel 4 may be heated by resistance heating, carbon rod heating, induction, arc or glow discharge heating during the degasification process.
