Abstract

Black prints are produced on fibrous materials by applying a printing paste containing an anti-diazo- or hydrazine-sulphonic acid salt of a 4-amino-diphenylamine, which in addition to the amino group may contain other substituents not imparting solubility in water, together with (as coupler) 1 : 3 : 5-trihydroxy-benzene, and then steaming. The pastes may be alkaline, neutral or acid and development may be effected with alkaline, neutral or acid steam. Examples describe the printing of cotton, the diphenylamine derivatives employed being sodiumdiphenylamine - 4 - antidiazo - sulphonate, sodium - 41 - methoxy - diphenylamine - 4 - hydrazine-sulphonate. The pastes contain starchtragacanth thickening, sodium chlorate, chlorite or chromate, and in one case, ammonium thiocyanate or acetic or lactic acid. In one example, steaming is effected with steam containing vapours of acetic and formic acids. Specifications 377,207 and 379,280, [both in Group IV], are referred to.
