Abstract

Dyestuffs of the naphthoylene-aryl-imidazole series and of the naphthalo-perinone series are formed on the fibre by applying an aqueous composition comprising (1) a compound having at least two carboxylic acid groups in peri-position to each other or a nuclear substituent thereof; (2) an o-diamine or peridiamine or a substitution product thereof; and (3) a condensing agent comprising an acid or an ammonium salt thereof, and then heating, e.g. by steam. Specified carboxylic acids are naphthalene-1,8-dicarboxylic acid and 1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid, 1,2 - benzanthraquinone - 3,41 - dicarboxylic acid, 2,81,8,21-dioxydo-1,1-dinaphthyl-4,5,41, 51-tetracarboxylic acid, 1,2,21,11-dinaphthazine-4,5,41, 51-tetracarboxylic acid, azo dyestuffs obtained by coupling diazotized 3-aminonaphthalene-1,8-dicarboxylic acid with arylamides of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid or of acetoacetic acid or by coupling diazotized amines with hydroxynaphthalene-1,8-dicarboxylic acid, and azo compounds obtained by oxidation of amino-naphthalene-1,8-dicarboxylic acid such as 3,31-azodinaphthalene-1,8,11,81-tetracarboxylic acid. Specified amines are o-phenylene diamine and its substitution products, several of which are given, and 1,8-naphthalene diamine and its substitution products, several of which are given. The aqueous composition may contain water-miscible solvents such as thiodiglycol, glycol monomethyl ether, glycerol and diglycol and, when employed for printing, the usual thickeners. Specified condensing agents, which may be admixed, are lactic, glycollic, sulphoacetic, methane disulphonic, benzene sulphonic and phosphoric acids and their ammonium salts. Numerous examples describe the printing and dyeing of cotton, viscose rayon and acetate rayon, and in one case resist prints are obtained by first printing on a diethylene triamine paste prior to dyeing with the aqueous composition, the diethylene triamine inhibiting formation of the dyestuff.
