Abstract
810,884. Pipe couplings. T. I. (GROUP SERVICES) Ltd. Nov. 5, 1957 [Nov. 5, 1957; April 18, 1957 ; May 6, 1957], Nos. 35062/56, 12686/57 and 14309/57. Class 99(1). A pipe coupling comprises nylon union parts 4, 5 having oppositely directed conical bores and a tubular sealing member 6 made of " low pressure " or Ziegler type polythene having oppositely directed truncated conical surfaces extending from a central rib 6a, the member 6 being inserted into pipe ends 7 of " high pressure " or standard polythene which are gripped thereon on tightening the union parts. The member 6 has circumferential grooves 8, the wall of each groove nearer the adjacent end being normal to the axis whilst the other wall is of conical form and of greater apical angle than the conical surface of the member as a whole. In modifications. Fig. 2 (not shown), a knife edged or rounded ridge is formed on the internal conical surface of each of the union parts to grip the pipe ends which may be grooved for engagement therewith, Fig. 3 (not shown), the sealing member 6 is formed without the grooves 8 and has cylindrical surfaces extending from the smaller ends and the part from which the rib extends may be waisted to form a shallow concave recess.
