[Also in Groups XXXVII and XXXIX] An electromagnetic device such as a polarized relay or telephone receiver has an energizing coil 16 surrounding an armature 15 pivoted by means of torsion arms 19, 20 adjacent to a permanent magnet 12. The latter is mounted between two polepieces 13, 14 having poles 17, 18 on either side of the armature at the end remote from its pivot so that the coil is between the air gap between the poles and the pivotal axis of the armature and the flux from the armature to the polepieces must pass through the permanent magnet. In a relay (not shown), the armature inertia may be balanced by contact actuating arms on the other side of the pivotal axis.
