[Also in Group XXXV] A polarized magnet system shown applied to a bell comprises, Fig. 1, a shallow U-shaped armature 6 pivoted at 5 and carrying a bell hammer 7 which is vibrated when coils 2, 3 on a bar-shaped core 1 are energized, a permanent magnet 4 being connected at one end to the core and having its other end opposite the pivot 5. In another construction, Figs. 4, 5, the permanent magnet 15 lies alongside the core 16 within a single coil 18 and is polarized in a direction across its thickness, the armature 19 having curved wings 17, 17<SP>1</SP> to improve the magnetic circuit and being pivoted on a spindle 5 by lugs 20, 20<SP>1</SP>. In a further construction (Fig. 3, not shown), a permanent magnet similar to that of Figs. 4, 5 is mounted either on the exterior of the coil adjacent the armature or on the armature. The magnet system may be alternatively applied to a relay by omitting the hammer and mounting a contact arrangement on the armature.
