Abstract
1,041,742. Electromagnetic relays. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 6, 1963 [March 6, 1962], No. 8568/62. Heading H2B. A polarized relay has a magnetic circuit, the core 13 of which is of low reluctone relative to the parts 14, 15 and permanent magnet 16 and resilient magnetic contacts 20, 21 are arranged magnetically in parallel with the core 17. Only a small magnetomotive force is developed across the ends of the core 17 and the contacts and the relay is very sensitive to energization of the coil 17. The contacts 20, 21 may be mounted on steel brackets 18, 19 by insulating cement and may be the contacts of a sealed magnetic contact device filled with oil or sulphur hexafluoride and having a contact gap of only 0À125 millimetres. The engaging contact tips may be of silver and provide a residual gap to assist in quick release. The magnetic axis of the permanent magnet 16 is normal to the contacts 20, 21 so that leakage flux will not influence the contact operation.
