998,096. Electromagnetic relays. R. MOSER, and J. MOREL. Feb. 2, 1962 [Feb. 6, 1961], No. 4118/62. Heading H2B. A polarized relay has most of the permanent magnet flux shunted away from the part of the magnetic circuit which includes the armature. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the permanent magnet 1 is shunted by an annular member 2 having polepieces 3 co-operating with an armature 5. The value of the current in the coils 4 which will allow a biasing spring 5 to move the armature away from the polepieces 3 is set by rotation of the magnet which engages the annular face 7 of the shunt 2. The force will vary as the cosine of the angle α between the magnet axis and the line through the poles 3. In Fig. 8, the armature 5 is mounted on a slidable shaft 16 and the magnetic bias is also influenced by a second shunt 19 adjustable toward and away from the magnet 1 by a screwed box 18. In Fig. 9 (not shown), the setting is controlled by a second shunt movable to vary its area of engagement with the electromagnet.
