Abstract
786,616. Cartridge wads. PHILIPPE, M. G. March 16, 1956 [March 18, 1955; June 10, 1955; Oct. 26, 1955], No. 8328/56. Class 9(1) A cartridge wad comprises a tube 1 of flexible material with end closures 2, 10 the closure 2 being perforated and may be covered by a paper disc which contacts the propellant when the wad is placed in position. The inner surface of the tube 1 may be barrel-shaped. On firing a cartridge fitted with the wad, the paper disc ruptures and the gases pass through the perforations into the wad expanding the side walls to provide a gas check. The wad may have a reduced outer diameter on the shot side and be provided with a gas-seal ridge. The closure 2 may be cup-shaped with a bent-over rim secured to the wad or alternatively the closure may seat in an annular recess in the wad, two such discs may be used with a paper disc between them. Polyethylene may be used to make the wad, which may be moulded.
