Abstract

938,091. Shotgun cartridges. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. March 7, 1962 [March 13, 1961], No. 8853/62. Class 9 (1). A cartridge for shot-guns comprises a paper tube 10 engaged in a metal head 12 and containing a shot charge 19, a split sleeve 30 of resinous material being interposed between the shot and the tube. A primer 13 inserted in the head 12 extends into a base wad 14 above which a powder charge 16 is housed between flanged wads 15, 17, the wad 17 being separated from the shot by one or more compressible wads 18. Over the shot, the case is closed by folding the tube 10 in a star-shaped pattern 20, 21 or by crimping the tube on to a disc. The strip 29 used to form the sleeve 30 is of such a thickness and hardness that it becomes indented by the peripheral layer of shot, but has sufficient resilience for the sleeve to open out as the shot leaves the gun in which the cartridge is fired. Polyethylene or a similar polyolefine having a thickness between 0.015 to 0.040 and a Shore hardness less than 75 on the " C " scale may be used for the strip.
