Abstract

300,734. Barker, J. H. Sept. 10, 1927. Gun cartridges. - A metal cartridge case for ordnance and smallarm ammunition is made with a thickened base through which an axial hole 5 is formed, the charge, whether of flake or grain powder, cordite, or other explosive, being loaded into the case through the hole in the base after a, wad 4 has been inserted and a neck has been formed at 2 for the reception of a bullet 3, the hole 5 being then closed by a hollow member 6 which provides an anvil 7 and receives a percussion cap 8. The cap holder 6 may be formed by pressing a disc of brass &c. in dies, or may be made from a solid block of metal. The formation of the cap holder may be such that it is expanded against the wall of the cartridge case when the propellant charge is fired, and is thereby prevented from being blown out. An example of such a construction is shown in Fig. 4, wherein the plug 6 has an annular flange 26 for this purpose. The body 1 of the cartridge case may be made of solid-drawn tubing. To enable the wad to be inserted from the base after the mouth of the case has been necked and annealed, as well as to facilitate loading with cordite, the hole in the base may have approximately the full diameter of the case, as shown in Fig. 4.
