Abstract
773,253. Thermionic valves. MACHLETT LABORATORIES, Inc. May 27, 1955 [June 22, 1954], No. 15396/55. Class 39(1). A thyratron having an anode, a hollow cylindrical cathode, a tubulai shield surrounding the anode and terminating near the cathode, and a baffle carried by the shield which causes the discharge to take a circuitous path is characterized by a firing electrode within the shield, which is insulated from the other electrodes. In the Figure the anode 25 is mounted via a block 26 and cylinder 27; it may be necessary to use an intermediary collar 28 of glass-sealing material. The shielding structure is a cylinder 34 with an internal annular ring 35 ; spaced from the ring by insulators is a baffle 36. The spacing is such that the shielding structure is nowhere distant from the anode by more than five times the mean free path of the ions. The firing electrode is a rod 40 bent over as at 40a, and supported by a bracket 42 and insulating bushing 41 from the internally coated cathode cylinder 18. The shield may have a low impedance connection to the cathode or to an independent biasing source. Figs. (not shown) 2, 3 and 4 are modifications illustrating different arrangements of the shield and baffle structure, and various forms of cathode. The firing electrode may be supported from the shield itself, if adequately insulated therefrom. The thyratron is stated to fire easily, with improved uniformity of firing time, and less danger of erratic firing.
