749,727. Detonators for blasting and military purposes. HOLT, E. VON. Nov. 30, 1953 [Dec. 3, 1952], No. 33272/53. Class 9(1) A detonator is provided with a casing having a cylindrical portion containing a secondary charge and a portion having a conical cavity whose apex communicates with a flash passage in the end wall, the conical cavity being filled with a primary charge. The detonator casing may be of non-metallic material into which a primary charge comprising a mixture of lead nitride and mercury fulminate is pressed. Over the primary charge 12 is introduced a secondary charge 13 of high explosive, e.g., trinitrotoluene, tetranitromethylaniline, nitropenta or hexogen, which may be cast in the detonator or moulded before inserted or pressed in the detonator casing. A sleeve, which may be of metal, may be fitted over the base of the detonator to hold an ignition cord in place or a percussion cap or length 11 of delay fuze, Fig. 5. By fitting a number of sleeves together, Fig. 6, the delay time may be varied. A wide variety of materials may be used to form the casing, including synthetic resins and ebonite, which may incorporate filler materials such as wood, paper and fabric, and ceramics such as china and glass. A coating may be applied by spraying or dipping.
