Abstract

633,528. Blasting-charges. WRIGHT, H. R., ALLAN, W. G., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 19, 1947, No. 30668. [Class 9 (i)] A blasting explosive assembly comprises a waxed cardboard tube 1 in which explosive cartridges C are inserted end-to-end, each cartridge being arranged to accommodate a detonator in initiating relationship with a primer 11, and deformable spacing members 5 separating the cartridges, the position of these members being indicated on the outer wall of the tube. Along the surface of the tube 1 is a helical ridge 2 to run in a helical slot 8 in a coupling tube 7 by which two tubes 1 may be united. Each cartridge comprises a cup-shaped paper container 9 in which is placed a paper disc to which is cemented a pellet primer 11 with an axial recess to accommodate a detonator. A paper disc covers the other end of the primer and a charge 13 of high velocity rigid explosive is cast into the container 9 around the pellet 11. This charge may be a mixture of T.N.T. and tetryl in the proportions 75: 25 by weight and the primer may be compressed tetryl, P.E.T.N. or cyclotrimethylene trinitramine. Each cartridge surface is smeared with a cement based on nitro-cellulose to cause it to adhere to the tube 1. The cartridges are then inserted into the tube, annular spacing discs 5 of felt being placed between the cartridges and the open end of the tube turned over to close it. The tube can be cut at the indicator marks 4 to provide a shorter assembly or by coupling a short length to a complete tube a longer assembly can be obtained. An electric detonator may be inserted in the pellet primer exposed at the end of the tube.
