Abstract
716,909. Blasting fuzes. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 9, 1953 [April 21, 1952], No. 9935/52. Class 9(1) A ventless short delay electric detonator comprises a copper tube 1 containing a detonating charge 2 of tetryl and a more sensitive charge 3 consisting of a mixture of aluminium, lead azide and lead styphnate. Above these charges is a delay element consisting of a delay composition 7 in a lead tube 4 with a textile covering 5 and a polythene sheath 6 having a tight fit in the tube 1. At each end of the delay element is a layer of gasless igniting composition consisting of red lead and silicon, a perforated metal cup 10 being inverted over the upper layer 9 and the upper part of the delay element to seal off the layer 9 from the space 15 above. In the space 15 is an electric fuzehead 11 carried by lead wires 13, 131 which pass through a sealing, plug 12 around which the tube 1 is crimped. The lead tubes of the delay elements may have an external diameter of 0.08 inch and internal diameter of 0.05 inch. The textile covering may be replaced by paper.
