Abstract
708,422. Blasting devices. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. June 15, 1951 [June 15, 1950], No. 14950/50. Class 9(1) Blasting device for connecting detonating fuze to a plurality of explosive charges for detonation at predetermined intervals comprises a tubular metal sheath 1 surrounding a metal detonator tube 2 and connected at one end to a length 3 of flexible detonating fuze and crimped at the other end to a thick-walled tube 6 of soft rubber or neoprene. At the opposite end of the tube 6 is crimped a second metal sheath 9 joining the tube 6 to a detonator tube 12 which is surrounded by a metal sheath 11. The fuze 3 is waterproofed and has a. textile covering and a core of pentaerythritol tetranitrate. Short rigid metal tubes 7, 8, flanged at one end, are inserted in the ends of the tube 6 to keep the bore open and assist crimping of the sheaths 1, 9. The tubes 2, 12 each contain a secondary detonating charge 24 and a primary charge 23. An open-ended flanged tube 13 containing a compressed delay composition 25, preferably a lead salt of a polynitro-phenolic compound, is held in the tube 11 by a paper tube 10 and the joints between the detonator tubes and the metal sheaths are waterproofed by thin rubber tubes 29. Protuberances 15, 18 are provided on the detonator tubes to assist in positioning the sheaths 1, 9, 11. When the assembly is to be used a length 4 of detonating fuze is inserted in the open end 14 of the sheath 11 which is then crimped to to the fuze. On initiation of the fuze 3 the charges 23, 24 in the tube 2 are detonated. The flame gases enter the tube 6, bulging it out and thereby losing some energy and pass thence to ignite the delay composition 13, which in turn ignites the charges 23, 24 and fuze 4. The fuze 4 then detonates the charge attached to it. Initiation of the fuze 3 may be by a detonator, an explosive charge or a device according to the invention.
