Abstract
596,402. Detonation signalling; fuzes. HALL, C. R. L., LESLIE, J. P. and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 28, 1945, No. 7804. [Class 9 (ii)] In a ventless electric multiple delay action detonator, more particularly for marine signalling by detonation through water, in which the delay fuzes are simultaneously ignited from a common source of current to bring about detonation of explosive charges at different intervals of time, the delay fuze elements comprise a compressed mixture 7 of a major proportion of a coarsely ground pelleted mixture of potassium permanganate and antimony, dusted with a minor proportion of a finer grained powder mixture of red lead, silicon and cerium or an alloy thereof. The delay fuzes may be ignited by application of potential difference before immersion in water. The detonator shown comprises two fuzes having this mixture 7 pressed into two tubes 6 which may be of different lengths to give different time intervals. Each fuze is mounted in a metal tube 1 which also contains a fastburning composition 5 of potassium permanganate and antimony, an initiating explosive charge 3 of lead azide composition in a confining cup 4 and a detonating explosive charge 2 of tetryl, pentaeyrthritol tetranitrate or cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine. The ends of tubes 1 are crimped about a resilient insulating plug 16 carrying a conductor 14 connecting the fuzeleads 11 which are connected to the leading wires 13 which are connected to the tubes 1. Fuzeheads 11 are built up by a succession of nitrocellulose dopes containing firstly, lead picrate and cerium-magnesium alloy and secondly, aluminium powder, charcoal and lead dioxide and cerium-magnesium alloy and lastly a collodion coating.
