843,227. Electric detonators and delay elements therefor. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 2, 1959 [Feb. 19, 1958], No. 5368/58. Classes 9(1) and 9(2) A delay element for electric detonator comprises a metal tube sheathing a delay fuze composition, the charge being subdivided into at least three separated columns of non-circular right section arranged parallel to the axis of the tube in positions intermediate the axis and the peripheral surface of the element. The delay composition may be a 70 : 30 red lead - silicon mixture, a 50/50 lead peroxide - silicon mixture or a 45.5; 45.5 : 9 lead peroxide-silicontitanium dioxide mixture by weight. To make the element, a lead tube 1 is filled with the composition 2 and drawn through a series of dies to reduce the diameter. A number of the tubes 1, say five, is then placed in a lead tube 7, Fig. 5, regularly spaced around a lead rod 3 pentagonal in cross-section. The assembly is then drawn to reduce the diameter and the metal flows to form a matrix in which the cores 2 are embedded, the cores being distorted from their circular section during the drawing operation. The end portions of the assembly are removed and the rest cut into lengths corresponding to the desired delay times before insertion into the detonator casing above the normal primary and secondary charges. The bridge-wire of the electric fuzehead may be coated with a composition comprising lead mononitro-resorcinate and potassium chlorate covered with a composition consisting of cerium-magnesium alloy, potassium chlorate, aluminium and charcoal. The plug carrying the lead wires to the electrodes may be made of a polymerised chloroprene composition. An axial column of the delay composition may also be provided in the element.
