Abstract

807,499. Igniters for rocket motors. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Aug. 26, 1957 [Sept. 7, 1956], No. 26896/57. Class 9(1) An igniter for the propellant 2 in a rocket motor 1 comprises a detonating fuze cord 4 embedded in a mass 3 of pyrotechnic material, the cord having a metal sheath surrounding a core of 0.5 to 5 grains per foot of a high velocity detonating explosive. The igniter may be cylindrical, Fig. 1, in which case the cord 4 extends axially through the mass 3 or the igniter may be disc-like, the cord 4 being spirally arranged. An electric blasting cap 5 is attached to one end of the cord 4, the lead wires 6 being taken through the rocket nozzle. Should the propellant 2 have axial passage of circular or starshaped section, a single cylindrical igniter is placed in the passage. If the passage is cross-shaped in section, an igniter of conforming section may be used. If the propellant has no through passage, but has four wedge-shaped cavities in the peripheral curved surface, a cylindrical or wedge-shaped igniter may be placed in each cavity. The igniter of Fig 6 is formed by loading prepressed pellets of an aluminium-potassium perchlorate composition 3 into a container 7 of plasticcoated wire mesh containing a length of detonating cord or a tube 8 of metal, synthetic polymeric film or paper to receive the cord. In addition to the metal sheath, the cord may be covered with a countering of a textile or synthetic polymeric composition. The detonating explosive may be PETN and the sheath may be of lead or ductile metal alloys. For rockets to be fired in sequence, different lengths of cord connecting the rockets to a central initiation source may be used.
