Abstract

671,030. Blasting cartridges. DOWIE, D. L. Dec. 29, 1947. [Feb. 18, 1947; Dec. 23, 1947] Nos. 4643/47 and 33985/47. Class 9 (i). A cylindrical explosive charge for blasting in mining operations has a cavity containing a tube 1, whose length is more than five times its diameter, and a detonator 8 for initiating the explosive placed beyond a closed end 5 of the tube. The tube 1 has a flat end wall 3 protruding from the charge into an inert centring ring 4. The tube may be sealed at both ends and evacuated, and the inner end 5 is preferably conical. The tube may be of metal or glass with an internal coating 2 of copper or other metal. The explosive charge may consist of a layer 6 of explosive having a high detonation velocity covered by a layer 7 of lower velocity. Alternatively the charge may be built up of discrete annuli surrounding the evacuated tube, a normal blasting charge being tamped in pn top of the annuli. In yet another form inert material is loaded into the explosive to progressively decrease its density away from the point of initiation. A wrapper 9 of paper or metal may encase the charge.
