Abstract
449,268. Blasting; tampings. VOORTMANN, W., 3, Dudenstrasse, Dortmund, Germany. Feb. 1, 1935, No. 3381. Convention date, Feb. 16, 1934. [Classes 9 (i) and 68 (i)] A tamping-plug 3, Fig. 2, with a side groove 6 for the fuse leads 2 and a central cord 4 for holding the plug is inserted in a bore-hole, which is of uniform diameter, at a certain distance from the explosive charge to leave an air space and is held in that position by the cord 4 while the first part of the tamping is rammed in, after which the tamping is completed in the usual way. The plug 3 is made of an incombustible material, or of salt, and has a diameter slightly less than that of the borehole. The cord 4 is threaded through the plug and its end 4<1> is knotted, a recess 5 being formed in the plug to receive the knot. The explosive charge may comprise several cartridges one against the other at the bottom of the bore-hole. Cords of various lengths indicated by various colours may be provided to facilitate determining the position of the plug. The blasting operation is begun by forming a recess N, Fig. 5, by exploding charges in inclined bore-holes 10, 11, 12 ; then normal bore-holes 13, 14, and so on are fired to break up the walls between these bore-holes and the recess N into big pieces.
