Abstract
649,806. Blasting cartridges. LOWE, A. J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 29, 1948, No. 30907. [Class 9 (i)] Blasting cartridge, Fig. 6, contains a charge 8 cast around a pellet booster 5 and an annular resilient washer 4 whose central perforation is of smaller diameter than a channel in the charge coaxial with a detonator-receiving channel in the booster. On insertion of a detonator 9 the washer grips the surface of the detonator and prevents accidental withdrawal. To fill the cartridge a shouldered mandrel 1, Fig. 3, and the tubular casing 6 is placed on a cup-like base 3. The washer 4 is placed on the shoulder of the mandrel and the booster 5 of compressed explosive inverted over the washer. The casing is then filled in stages with molten explosive 7, each increment being allowed to solidify before pouring in the next. When the casing is full, the mandrel 1 and base 3 are removed and an electric detonator inserted. The main explosive charge may be trinitrotoluene, mixtures of trinitrotoluene with cyclonite or pentaerythritol tetranitrate and the pellet booster may be formed by compression of cyclonite, pentaerythritol tetranitrate or tetryl, or their mixtures with trinitrotoluene with the addition of a waterproof binder. The washer may be soft rubber, neoprene or other rubber substitute.
