Abstract
749,445. Piles. SOIL MECHANICS, Ltd., and LEONARD, M. W. May 25, 1954 [March 2, 1953], No. 5774/53. Class 68(2) In making a cast-insitu concrete pile of the type in which a borehole is excavated and subsequently filled with concrete, a rigid shoe 2 is lowered to the bottom of the borehole and driven into the stratum at the bottom thereof before the concrete is poured into the borehole on top of the shoe. The shoe may have a boss 6 around which a sealing ring 7 is placed.. A bell 4 having a quick release mechanism at its lower end is fitted over the boss 6 and a monkey 3 within the bell drives home the shoe. The bond 8 for monkey 3 passes through a gland 9 in the top of the bell which latter has a non-return valve and both monkey and bell may have weights 10 on top. In a modification the shoe has a recess in its top into which the end of a tremie is fitted, the treinie acting as a dolly whilst the shoe is forced into the ground. If the borehole is inundated, a peripheral recess may be provided in the shoe into which a sealing ring is placed. According to the Provisional Specification, the shoe may be formed with a projecting boss around which the sealing ring is fitted.
