Abstract

441,927. Boring earth. NEWTON, D. M., and FRANKI COMPRESSED PILE CO., Ltd., Wellington Buildings, The Strand, Liverpool. July 28, 1934, No. 22064. [Class 85] Holes are formed in the ground, preparatory to casting piles therein in situ, by intermittently sinking an open-ended tube for a short distance, withdrawing the tube with a plug of soil retained therein, and expelling the plug by means of a drop hammer working within the tube. The tube 1 may be sunk by hauling on ropes &c. 3 passing over pulley blocks 4 connected tc the tube, or to a ring thereon, by hooks 5 ; the sinking may be assisted by a drop hammer 9 with a shank 9a, the hammer preferably acting through a wooden pad 11 carried by a double-channelled ring 10 fitting on the tube 1. Lateral slots in the hammer 9 and ring 10 permit passage of the rope 13 of the plugexpelling hammer 2.
