Abstract

Piles; piles driving.-The foot or point of a hollow pile consists of a plunger-like supporting member in a foot member, arranged so that a pile-driver inside the pile may act either on the supporting- member or on the foot member. The pile shown in Fig. 1. which is driven by a piledriver 16, consists of two U- section iron beams 1 connected by bolts 2, 3, and containing four vertical rods 8. The lower end consists of a foot member 4 with a central vertical channel 5<a>, 5<b> in which is a sliding, plunger-like supporting - member 6<a>, 6<b>, with an end 7 capable of penetrating the rock. The lower ends of the rods 8 are also shaped as borers, and their upper ends are enlarged so as to be operated upon by another pile driver. Passages 15, 11 lead water to the nozzle 13 on the borer 7. After the part 7 has penetrated the rock strata, the pile driver 16 and the water-supply passage 15 are removed, the rods 8 are driven into the rock, and the casing 1 filled with reinforced concrete &c.
