669,661. Concrete piles. ROSEVEAR, H. F., and McALPINE & SONS, Ltd., SIR R. Aug. 3, 1950. [Aug. 12, 1949] No. 21073/49. Class 68 (ii). Concrete piles are founded by sinking a tubular metal shell 1 by excavation carried out inside the shell, placing concrete 8 in the sunken shell to form a concrete pile having a duct 7 extending therethrough from end to end, inserting through the duct a rotary rock drill having a hollow bit 9 adapted to be supplied with liquid under pressure through tubular drill rods 10, causing the bit to penetrate the subsoil below the foot of the shell, forcing grout through the drill to form a bulb 18 of cemented material on the foot of the pile, and withdrawing the shell. The shell may be withdrawn before or at the same time as the grout is fed through the drill. The shell consists of lengths of steel tube 1 connected end to end by screwed spigots 2 and sockets 3, and a toe ring 4 screwed to the bottom length of tube, and is sunk by excavation by means of a grab or bucket operated within the shell by a light derrick 5 and winch 6 with or without assistance by blows from a light dolly or by attaching kentledge. A tubular core 7 and reinforcement are placed in the shell before filling with concrete, and the drill operated through the tube 7 by a hammer 11 fed from a compressed air line 12. The top rod 10a, closed at the upper end, has radial ports communicating with a sleeve 13 in which the rod is rotatable. A hose 14 connected to the sleeve is coupled by a valve 15 to a water main 16 or a cement sump 17. Water from 16 is first passed through the drill to flush the gravel below the pile, and grout from sump 17 is then introduced as the shell is withdrawn, the drill being finally withdrawn. Alterntively the pile may be inserted into the shell in preferably one or two precast lengths with a centre bore through which the drill and the grout are passed, the grout filling the spaces within the shell-including any cavities between the abutting ends of the sections.
