Abstract
388,242. Piles. QUINN, J. C., 28, Avonmore Road, Kensington, London. April 18, 1932, No. 11033. [Class 68 (ii).] A hollow pile is formed with a foot adapted to be splayed. The pile shown consists of a body 1 of wood or a reinforced concrete with a central bore 2 opening into a recess 3, beneath which is a foot of truncated pyramidal form made up of four sections 4 each pivoted to a ring 8 in a recess formed in the lower ends of the sections. Beneath this is a shoe 10 forming the lower end of a cage 11 enclosing and supporting the sections 4. This pile is driven to a certain depth, and a steel rod is inserted in the bore 2, its lower end resting on the head of a pin 9 placed between the four sections 4. The rod is then driven down, forcing down the shoe 10 and cage 11, and causing the taper head of the pin 9 to engage with the ring 8, and to splay the sections 4. Driving then proceeds until the sections 4 are horizontal ; the foot is then grouted with, and the bore filled up with, concrete.
