Abstract

749,979. Subaqueous structures; piles. MAUNSELL, G. A. Sept. 27, 1954. No. 27848/54. Class 68(2) A structure such as a section of an underwater subway S is anchored to the bed of a river or estuary by pitching a pile P above the water level H, passing it through the water so as to pass through a hole which is preformed in the structure, thereafter passing the pile through water and into the ground K, the pile being subsequently rigidly connected to the structure and the portion which protrudes above the structure being cut off underwater. As shown the section S of a subway has galleries F, G in which men can work at atmospheric pressure: Each hole through which a pile is to pass is formed by a steel sheath T around which the concrete, such as that forming wall W, is cast. The pile P comprises a point V, which is driven in to the ground K by means of a drop hammer R operated by mechanism above water and a hollow tubular shank I. When the pile has been fully driven a rubber tube housed in a slot 7 in sheath T is inflated and grout passed from gallery F through a tube, not shown. into the small annular space between the pile P and sheath T. Gun propelled rivets may be used to secure sheath T and pile shank I before the grouting is done. Where each pile emerges from the roof of subway S, a diver burns off the projecting part thereof and the piles may subsequently be filled with concrete C as pile Q, a reinforcing cage being lowered into the pile before concreting if desired.
