[Also in Group X] An anchor in soft and impermeable ground (clay) which is liable to dry out seasonally to a certain level and to swell when damp comprises an artificial boulder 8 below the level, and high tensile wires or wire 9 arranged to be tensioned against foundation work comprising a pile having a lower part 5 of greater cross-sectional area than that of an upper part 6. Holes 2 are dug to the level at which the clay site 1 normally dries out in a dry season, a steel tube 3 is inserted into each hole, concrete blocks 5 surrounding each tube are formed in the holes, and concrete columns 6 forming supports for the building are built on the blocks 5 to surround each tube. Drills are inserted through each tube to form bores 7 in the wet clay, a cavity 8 is formed at the bottom of each bore by an explosive charge or by water jet or by underreaming, the end of a wire 9 is inserted into each cavity, concrete mix is injected through the tubes into the cavities, and when the concrete is dry the wires are tensioned against the tops of the columns. The spaces between the columns and the holes are filled with clay. In a modification, the wires are grouted into holes drilled in the boulders, and after the wires are tensioned the wires are grouted into the bores.
