Abstract

A hollow structure is of the type having an internal volume enclosed completely tightly, by a wall of a filling matl. such as concrete cast between two ridig shells of steel plate, one internal and one external, which are stayed together by welded struts, formed by tubes. The struts are assembled into a trelliswork structure. In addn., the steel shells are reinforced by a rectangular network of stiffeners, the points of attachment of which between the shells are offset to each other. Used in the exploitation of underwater deposits of oil at great depths, to provide temporary storage or permanent accommodation for equipment and personnel, instead of by means of platforms extending above the surface. The hollow structure with a wall formed by inner and outer plates is cheaper, since welding is easier. The application extends to the replacement of any thick-walled steel structure such as the envelope of a nuclear reactor.
