Abstract

1,266,247. Off-shore structures; wells &c. CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO. 21 Oct., 1969 [23 Dec., 1968], No. 51570/69. Headings E1F and E1H. A structure for subaqueus oil exploitation has a shaft 101 attached by a universal joint 67 to a tank 50 and supporting pipes 80, each pipe conducting oil to a platform 66 or being used as a drilling-string conduit. The tank has an open bottom and houses a vessel 51 with a skirt 54 fixed to the peripheral wall 56 of the tank by radial tubes 55, said wall being partially filled with concrete for ballasting purposes and so as to leave a space 60. The shaft 101 comprises either a single tube, Fig. 8 (not shown), or tubular portions 102, 104 and a trussed portion 103. When transporting the structure to the site the vessel 51, the space 60 and the upper part of the tank are filled with air to render the tank buoyant, the upper end of the shaft being temporarily filled with water, Fig. 16 (not shown). To sink the tank the interior thereof and the space 60 are flooded and the water in the shaft is expelled, whereafter the vessel 51 is flooded in two stages, Figs. 17 to 20 (not shown). The pipes are then slid through guides 81 and holes in a ring 57. The portion 102 may be filled with concrete or be used to store oil. The portion 104 provides buoyancy to keep the shaft erect. When shaft includes a single tube the latter may be used for oil storage, ambient water being given access to the lower end of the tube. Alternatively, the tube is partially charged with water or filled with compressed air to equalize pressures. The vessel 51 may be omitted and the bottom of the tank closed, Figs. 3 to 7 (not shown), in which event the tank may store oil and be secured by piles. The tank may be replaced by a weight of similar shape, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), or a pile. The pipes may pass through the interior of the shaft, Fig. 2. The shaft may be extended by rendering it as a plurality of articulated tubes with universal joints, Fig. 15 (not shown). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,208,834.
