[Class 68 (ii).] A hollow pile is driven by applying pressure at the top end and by means of a monkey imparting blows at the lower end. Fig. 1 shows a pile and pile-driving apparatus ; the pile consists of U- section bars 1, Fig. 7, connected by bolts 2, and a foot 3 with a spigot part entering the lower end of the pile; it is pressed down by a screw-jack 6, Fig. 1, and driven by the monkey 5, Fig. 3, striking the foot 3. The jack comprises two screw spindles 6 in a yoke 7 ; they are rotated by worm wheels 9, a worm shaft 8, and a motor. The jack is mounted on a framing comprising a beam 15, the ends of which are extended under the foundations of the building being reinforced. The motor also drives the means for lifting the monkey 5 by means of the wire 20. To enable the pile foot 3 to move under the impact of the monkey, it is connected to the tube 1 by bolts 23 in slots 22. The pile shown in Fig. 3 comprises also a plungerlike member 26 designed to enter the rock strata beneath earth strata. To reinforce the pile, bars 31, set in strips 32, Fig. 7, are placed in the corners of the pile and secured by nuts 34.
