Abstract

653,017. Concrete piles, construction and driving. WAAL, J. A. De. May 4, 1948. No. 12210. [Class 68(ii)] Hollow concrete piles which are divided into longitudinal sections are driven by first driving one section 11<SP>1</SP> then centering the following section 11 on the driven section by means of a short loose coupling tube 10 fitting into the interior of the two sections, the pile-driving blows being struck within the integral foot of the lowest section simultaneously with the pressing down of the whole pile by means of a force exerted on the top end of the upper section. The driving apparatus consists of a platform 1 movable along rails, a scaffold 2 pivoted at the base, a winch 3 at the rear, and a ballast block (not shown) coupled to the front and movable along rails. A drawing cap 7 is suspended by pulley blocks from the beam 4, and has pulley blocks 8 on the underside. Cables pass over the blocks 8 and blocks on the platform to the winch 3. The cap 7 is placed over the coupling tube 10 of a pile section 11 which is similarly coupled at its base to a driven section 11<SP>1</SP>, and presses the pile into the ground. A cable 14 from the winch passes over a pulley at the top of the scaffold and carries a pile driver 15. The base hollow concrete pile section (Fig. 3) has a striking bottom 16 reinforced by a tube 17 and cushioned by a wooden buffer 18, which may have a semi-spherical shape to fit a similar shape in the striking bottom. The pile driver may also have a semi-spherical end. The foot may be reinforced by a thickened concrete portion which also increases the carrying capacity of the pile. The bore of the pile may have any required shape. The driving blows may be applied to a striking ring or to a plurality of striking cams in the foot. The coupling tubes 10 act as guides for the pile driver 15.
