Abstract
655,231. Piles. BRITISH STEEL PILING CO., Ltd., and HILEY, A. Oct. 25, 1948, No. 27736. [Class 68 (ii)] In driving concrete and like foundation piles, a pile shoe which can be broken open when a requisite depth has been attained is used. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the shoe comprises a cast iron part 1, driven by the preparatory tube 2, and a central concrete part 3 which is knocked out or broken up on being driven to the requisite depth, whereupon a deeper pile portion can be driven through the opening. In Fig. 2 a normal shoe 6 driven by the preparatory shell 7 drives the supplementary shoe 8 in front of it, the shoe 8 being so shaped that it can be split open by a centre punch or the like driven into the centre of the normal shoe.
