Abstract
748,677. Piston packing. BERGERON, A. Jan. 26, 1954, No. 2325/54. Class 122(1) A compound piston-ring comprises an inner split ring-section 2 having an outwardly-extending rib 10 received in a groove in an outer split ring-section 4 and interengaging recesses and tongues on opposite ends of one of the ring-sections. A tongue 14 on the inner ring engages in a recess 12 at the joint of the ring, and a pair of tongues on each of the opposed ends of the outer - ring-section, Figs. 5, 6, form a joint with a key 16 attached to the rib 10 which is preferably tapered as illustrated. Alternatively, the inner ring joint may be provided by a key 48 attached to the outer ring, as in the modification of Figs. 9, 11. A wedge-shaped projection, as at 54 in Fig. 11, may also be provided on the lower limb 30, Fig. 8, of the outer section 24. The projection 54 engages a surface 56, Fig. 12, on the opposite end of the outer ring to one side of a key 52 fixed on the rib 32 of the inner ring 22. The keys also prevent relative rotation between the rings.
